The Story Part II: Don’t Despise the Days of Humble Beginnings…

December 13, 2010 | General

Why are you doing this? Do you really think people are paying you any attention? Do you make any money? You need to get a real job.  These are just a few pessimistic things I hear when it comes to me and Light of Chance. With each statement, it’s like a slap in the face. I feel like those people just don’t get it and don’t get me either for that matter. You see, it has never been about the money or recognition. I do what I do straight from the heart. Truth be told, I have given away more money than Light of Chance has ever made over these first five years.  Yeah, some people may not pay attention to Light of Chance, but I know now, some people do and I know with each event, workshop and program, there will be more and those are the ones who I do it for.

When I started this journey, I had an informational meeting to tell the community and its leaders about Light of Chance and our Aspire Weekend. I sent out over 150 invitations. Only three people showed and 2 out of the 3, I haven’t seen since. The lone person was Pastor Robert L. Clemmons of Christ Church Holiness in Madisonville, KY. At the end of the meeting and every time I see him, he says the same thing to me, “Oooh, don’t despise the days of humble beginnings”! It took me a while to really understand what he was saying but I got it now Pastor Clemmons…I got it. Today, I learned the rest of the quote that epitomizes this magnificent journey, it’s “Start celebrating your achievements today and give thanks to Him for everything”. I am very thankful for the ride and I do celebrate my achievements today.

It has been five wonderful years since I started Light of Chance and sometimes I get lost in the hustle and bustle of running it. For the first time, I stopped and admired our work. It was a combination of things that made me take notice. I was on the website and the picture banner fading in and out with people’s faces with pure joy on them. I watched the videos and listen to the songs the kids wrote. I received the positive and kind words in my inbox and a fan page full of “Likes”. It was like wow Eric…you are truly blessed. It was an amazing feeling. If you know me, I have never been the one to brag or boast about anything but at that moment, I felt really proud of Light of Chance and myself.

So to answer the critics, I do this out of love and for the people; yes, people are paying me attention; it’s never and never will be about the money, and this is my job and it is real.

Light of Chance and I am far from where I would like it to be but I get excited when I think of where we headed. The sky is the limit and I am inviting you to continue the ride with us!
