“You are a brand – you are representing yourself at all times, “Eric Logan, executive director of Light of Chance told a group of 110 local high school students.
He encouraged them to protect that brand and to be mindful of it when presenting themselves in social media and to the public.
Light of Chance is a non-profit organization Logan began in 2005, which has been conducting the Teen Summit since 2007.
Logan said they visit local high schools and any student interested in participating is welcome to join. This is the second year they have had Teen Summit during the school day. Prior to that it was conducted during the summer.
“I hope they experience an awakening,” said Logan, who also said it’s about ensuring students have a good time.
The event is geared toward encouraging young people to sets goals for themselves — both short-term and long-term, and to teach them how to obtain those goals.
“We stress the need to recognize everyday leaders and to highlight some of their own leadership skills they may not realize they possess,” said Logan.
One of the exercises the students participated in during the Summit was to help boost self-esteem, Logan said.
“It is empowering for the kids,” he said.
Each student had a piece of paper taped to their back and everyone had a pen. All were instructed to write a positive comment on each of the other students’ papers. Logan believes the activity will increase self-esteem, and promote positive body image.
He entrusts the Summit will plant seeds that will later grow.
“We like to wrap up the Summit on a positive note and one that leaves a lasting impression,” he said.
