Job Description:

The Culinary Arts instructor will lead a class of 5th-12th grade students of various skill levels in culinary arts for our Breathe Youth Arts Program. This instructor will work to create lesson plans that help students grow in independent life skills and encourage investment in themselves, their special interests and their futures. The instructor will create and maintain a system that encourages the students to grow and learn while celebrating their achievements and building confidence

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan culinary arts curriculum
  • Teach participants about food safety
  • Teach participants proper sanitation practices
  • Lead a classroom of mixed age groups and varying skill levels
  • Create a fun and engaging learning environment
  • Teach cooking and baking techniques
  • Lead participants through demos
  • Responsible for teaching students about supplies and equipment used in the culinary arts field
  • Create a system of skill-based achievements, helping students to advance and grow in culinary arts
  • Lead classes through culinary lessons
  • Interact with under-served and vulnerable youth populations interact with under-served and vulnerable youth populations
  • Acts as a positive role model.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Training or experience in culinary arts and cooking techniques
  • Ability to plan curriculum
  • Knowledge of food safety, and proper sanitation practices
  • Knowledge of cooking techniques
  • Ability to engage with youth, providing a positive and fun learning environment
  • Ability to use, and teach others to use, culinary supplies and equipment
  • Ability to guide participants through demos and culinary classes
  • Ability to follow a budget and document spending
  • Leadership skills
  • Communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Experience working with children

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $12.00 – $14.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Pay Rate:$10.00 – $14.00 per hour

Hours per Week:10-15 hours, with occasional weeks of 25+ hours

Work Schedule: Flexible between 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Develop positive relationships with students through art instruction
  • Assist with implementing and facilitating music curriculum
  • Assist mentoring artists in implementing curriculum and building relationships between artists and participants
  • Create and foster a support network for youth
  • Assist with record-keeping and program evaluation.
  • Facilitate programming and special events, assist with the overall mission of the program, and serve as role models and mentor for area youth
  • Applicants must be able to connect with fifth-grade, middle, and high school students while also providing leadership and direction.
  • Must be self-motivated and flexible.
  • Assist with developing and implementing program goals and objectives.
  • Work directly with Executive Director
  • All other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least (1) year of experience working with youth in mentoring and/or teaching. A college degree is preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain personal and programmatic boundaries while providing supportive services
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals who may not share a basic commonality, including value systems and behavior norms.
  • Experience in working with culturally diverse communities and families, with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate.
  • Team-oriented, flexible, enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated to the formation and philosophy of the development of youth.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) certificate
  • Playing an instrument or vocal for at least 1 year
  • A valid state driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation
  • Demonstrate good writing and organizational skills as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.

Light of Chance, Inc., a highly visible local nonprofit, most notably known for its work with youth, is currently accepting applications for a part-time position as a music Youth Specialist for its Breathe Youth Arts Program. Breathe, an innovative after-school arts program for grades 5-12, develops creativity while providing a positive learning environment for area youth to express themselves, engage in important issues, and experience personal and social transformation through the arts. The program educates and fosters artistic expression, leadership, and social skills through music, dance, creative writing, and visual arts.
